Sweet Mae Quilt Pattern

Pattern coming soon, June 28th, 2025.

Introducing the Sweet Mae quilt pattern — a versatile design with a playful twist on tradition. This intermediate-level quilt features smaller piecing for added precision and is offered in multiple sizes to suit your project needs. Whether you go bold with a modern color burst, keep it classic with uniform blocks, or explore a two-color version (shared on the blog), Sweet Mae invites you to make it your own.

This block was originally designed for my niece, Maggie Mae, and made its debut on her hoodie at QuiltCon 2023. Inspired by the theme of "small," this design uses tiny pieces that help build your piecing skills. Naming it was just as fun—Maggie’s favorite song is Sweet Caroline, and combined with her name, Sweet Mae was born.

The pattern includes two versions: the Modern version, made with a mix of fat quarters, and the Traditional version, using yardage for a calming, symmetrical look. I love both and hope you enjoy them.

Happy Sewing!

Katie

Fabric Requirements

Sweet Mae Cover Pattern

The cover version of Sweet Mae is stitched up in some of my favorite wovens—and let me tell you, they are so squishy and soft. I paired them with double bamboo batting for extra drape and swish, and the result is dreamy. If you’ve never worked with wovens before, I’ve written a full article inside The Quilting Compass membership to help you get started.

Wovens are a great way to add texture and challenge to any pattern, especially an intermediate one like Sweet Mae. My biggest tip for beginners: mix wovens with quilting cottons for added structure and ease while piecing.

Color Inspiration

One of the best things that help me decide on fabric is to take what is in my head and put it on paper, or in this case, on screen. Creating a mock-up gives me the visualization I need to purchase the fabric confidently. QuiltInk lets you create as many mocks ups as you want with solid fabric, and stay tuned because a new release is coming out to use printed patterns. Did I mention it’s free?

Pattern Partners

It truly takes a village to bring a pattern to life, and I couldn’t do it without the incredible group of makers who helped test Sweet Mae. But “testers” doesn’t quite capture it — they’re creative collaborators, detail-spotters, cheerleaders, and trusted voices in the process. Their feedback, fabric choices, and enthusiasm help shape each release into something better than I could create alone.
